Pharmacological properties

Enrofloxacin is a synthetic antibiotic from the fluoroquinolone family, which acts by inhibiting topoisomerase II, an enzyme involved in the bacterial replication mechanism. Enrofloxacin exerts a concentration-dependent bactericidal activity with similar values for the minimum inhibitory concentration and the minimum bactericidal concentration. It also presents activity against bacteria in the stationary phase by altering the permeability of the outer phospholipid membrane of the cell wall. In general, enrofloxacin shows activity against most Gram (-) bacteria, especially Enterobacteriaceae. Escherichia coli, Enterobacter spp., Klebsiella spp. and Proteus spp. They are generally susceptible. The susceptibility of Pseudomonas aeruginosa is variable, and when susceptible, it usually has a higher MIC than other sensitive organisms. Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus intermedius are usually susceptible. Streptococci, cocci, and anaerobic bacteria can generally be considered resistant. Induction of resistance against quinolones can develop by mutation in the bacterial gene gyrase or by changes in cell permeability to quinolones.

Interactions and incompatibilities

• The concomitant use with flunixin should be done under adequate veterinary monitoring, since the interactions between both active substances can give rise to adverse reactions due to delayed elimination.

• Concomitant use with theophylline requires adequate monitoring as theophylline serum levels may be increased.

• Concomitant use with substances containing magnesium or aluminum (such as antacids or sucralfate) may reduce the absorption of enrofloxacin. Therefore, these substances should be administered once at least two hours have elapsed after the administration of this medication.

• Do not administer simultaneously with tetracyclines, phenicols or macrolides due to their potential antagonistic effect.

• Do not administer simultaneously with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, as seizures may occur.

Indications

Cats: Treatment of upper respiratory tract infections.

Dogs: Treatment of lower urinary tract infections (associated or not with prostatitis) and upper urinary tract infections caused by Escherichia coli or Proteus mirabilis. Treatment of superficial and deep pyoderma.

• Do not use in young growing kittens, as there is a possibility of cartilage lesions (cats less than 3 months old or weighing less than 1 kg).

• Do not use in cats or dogs with nervous disorders, as enrofloxacin may cause CNS stimulation.

• Do not use in cats or dogs with known hypersensitivity to fluoroquinolones or to any of the excipients of the drug.

• Do not use in case of resistance to quinolones, as there may be almost complete cross-resistance with other quinolones and complete cross-resistance with other fluoroquinolones.

• Do not use together with tetracyclines, phenicols or macrolides due to potential antagonistic effects.

Adverse reactions

• Hypersensitivity reactions.

• Alterations of the central nervous system.

• Possible articular cartilage alterations in growing puppies.

• On rare occasions, cases of vomiting and anorexia have been observed.
