Oral tablet (Comp.o.)
Composition by tablet:
2mg tablet: Methylprednisolone 2 mg.
4mg tablet: Methylprednisolone 4 mg.
Pharmacological properties
Methylprednisolone is a synthetic steroid with glucocorticoid and anti-inflammatory action derived from prednisolone. It has greater anti-inflammatory action than prednisolone and presents better mineralocorticoid activity, resulting in less tendency to induce sodium and water retention.
Methylprednisolone inhibits the mechanisms and tissue changes associated with inflammation, decreases vascular permeability, reduces exudation, and strongly inhibits the migration of cells.
inflammatory cells.
Methylprednisolone acetate is absorbed by all routes, and especially rapidly when administered orally. Once absorbed, it passes into the blood where it circulates 90% bound to plasmatic globulins. The duration of steroid levels in the plasma after an injection
intravenous injection in healthy dogs is longer with methylprednisolone than with prednisolone, with the mean elimination half-life for the two steroids being 80,9 ± 7,5 minutes for methylprednisolone and 71,3 ± 1,7 minutes for methylprednisolone. prednisolone. Glucocorticoids are
They are mainly metabolized in the liver and excreted via the kidneys.

Interactions and incompatibilities
Do not administer with salicylates as they enhance their harmful effect on the gastric mucosa, with
antidiabetics since the hyperglycaemic action of corticosteroids can counteract the antidiabetic effect, with diuretics because they can cause significant hypokalaemia, with indomethacin because of a possible increase in the incidence of gastrointestinal disorders. Also, barbiturates
Systemically administered may cause a loss of therapeutic efficacy of corticosteroids. Due to the immunosuppressive action of methylprednisolone, its use in animals undergoing immunological treatment is not advisable.
Indications and target species
Dogs y Cats: Eczema, dermatitis, burns, allergic reactions and bronchial asthma.
Contraindications
• Animals with tuberculosis, peptic ulcer and Cushing's syndrome.
• When diabetes, osteoporosis, predisposition to thrombophlebitis, hypertension, congestive heart failure or renal failure appear, controlled administration is necessary
carefully.
efectos secundarios
• Prolonged therapy with methylprednisolone may cause increased protein breakdown and conversion to carbohydrates. Likewise, it can retard growth in young animals and cause osteoporosis. Although sodium and water retention and potassium loss is
less than that produced by cortisone and hydrocortisone, these effects should always be taken into account in prolonged therapies.
• Overdosage of methylprednisolone may cause symptoms of hypokalemia in which case corticosteroid therapy should be discontinued and the animal administered, by slow intravenous route, a 5% potassium chloride solution.
Route of administration
Orally.
