Anthelmintic in tablets
LABORATORY
FATRO IBERICA
PHARMACEUTICAL FORM
Coated tablet (Comp.rec.)
COMPOSITION BY MG:
Pyrantel Embonate 230mg; praziquantel 20 mg.
PHARMACOLOGICAL PROPERTIES
This veterinary medicinal product contains anthelmintics active against nematodes and gastrointestinal cestodes. The veterinary medicinal product contains two active substances: pyrantel embonate (pamoate), a derivative of tetrahydropyrimidine, and praziquantel, a partially hydrogenated derivative of pyrazinoisoquinoline. Pyrantel acts as a cholinergic agonist. Its mode of action is to stimulate the parasite's nicotinic cholinergic receptors, induce spastic paralysis, and thereby allow removal from the gastrointestinal system by peristalsis. Praziquantel is very rapidly absorbed and distributed throughout the parasite. In vitro and in vivo studies have shown that praziquantel severely damages the integument of parasites, causing shrinkage and paralysis. There is an almost instantaneous tetanic contraction of the parasite's musculature and a rapid vacuolization of the syncytial integument. This rapid contraction is due to changes in the fluxes of bivalent cations, especially calcium. With this fixed combination, pyrantel acts against the roundworms Toxocara cati and Toxascaris leonina. Praziquantel is effective against cestodes, particularly Dipylidium caninum and Taenia taeniaeformis. Since it contains praziquantel, the veterinary medicinal product is effective against Echinococcus multilocularis.
INTERACTIONS AND INCOMPATIBILITIES
Do not use simultaneously with piperazine compounds.
INDICATIONS AND TARGET SPECIES
Cats: Treatment of mixed infestations caused by the following gastrointestinal nematodes and cestodes:
– Nematodes: Toxocara cati, Toxascaris leonina.
– Cestodes: Dipylidium caninum, Taenia taeniaeformis, Echinococcus multilocularis.
CONTRAINDICATIONS
• Do not use simultaneously with piperazine compounds.
• Do not use in kittens less than 6 weeks of age.
• Do not use in animals with known hypersensitivity to the active substance or to any of the excipients.
SIDE EFFECTS
None known.
ROUTE OF ADMINISTRATION
Oral in a single dose.
POSOLOGY
Cats: To ensure administration of a correct dose, body weight should be determined as accurately as possible. The recommended dose is pyrantel 20 mg/kg (pyrantel embonate 57,5 mg/kg) and praziquantel 5 mg/kg, equivalent to 1 tablet per 4 kg body weight.
Body weight (kg) Dosage
1,0-2,0 kg 1/2 tablet
2,1-4,0 kg 1 tablet
4,1-6,0 kg 11/2 tablet
6,1-8,0 kg 2 tablets
• The tablets should be given directly to the cat, but if necessary they can be hidden in the food.
• In ascaris infestation, especially in kittens, complete elimination cannot be expected, so the risk of infection for humans may persist. Therefore, treatment should be repeated, with a suitable veterinary drug for nematodes at 14-day intervals until 2-3 weeks after weaning.
