Pharmacological properties
Enrofloxacin is a synthetic antibiotic of the fluoroquinolone family, with concentration-dependent bactericidal activity. It presents good activity against most Gram (-) bacteria, especially Enterobacteriaceae. Escherichia coli, Klebsiella spp., Proteus spp. and Enterobacter spp., are generally susceptible. The susceptibility of Pseudomonas aeruginosa is variable. Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus intermedius are usually susceptible.
Interactions and incompatibilities
Concomitant use with theophylline requires adequate monitoring as theophylline serum levels may be increased.
Concomitant use with substances containing magnesium or aluminum (such as antacids or sucralfate) may reduce the absorption of enrofloxacin. For this reason, these substances must be administered two hours after the administration of this medicine.
Do not use with tetracyclines, phenicols or macrolides due to possible antagonistic effects.
Indications
Cats: Treatment of upper respiratory tract infections.
Dogs: Treatment of lower urinary tract infections (associated or not with prostatitis) and upper urinary tract infections caused by Escherichia coli or Proteus mirabilis; treatment of superficial and deep pyoderma.
Contraindications
Do not use in case of resistance to quinolones.
Do not administer to animals with nervous disorders, as enrofloxacin may cause CNS stimulation.
Do not use in young growing kittens, as there is a possibility of cartilage lesions (cats less than 3 months old or weighing less than 1 kg).
Do not use in puppies or growing dogs (dogs less than 12 months of age in small breeds or less than 18 months of age in large breeds), as it may cause alterations in the epiphyseal cartilage in growing puppies.
Adverse reactions
During treatment cases of vomiting or diarrhea may appear. These signs subside spontaneously and treatment interruption is generally not necessary.
Possible articular cartilage alterations in growing puppies.
Route of administration
Orally.
The tablets are flavored and are well accepted by animals. They can be administered directly into the animal's mouth or by adding them to food.
